GRANITE STONE - beauty meets sophistication
Granite and marble are both natural stone products – with the technical difference being that granite is an igneous rock – it was once molten and formed as it cooled – and the minerals contained in granite usually appear as small flecks throughout the stone; and marble was originally limestone that changed due to intense heat and pressure, and with the introduction of other minerals resulted in its characteristic veining.
Granite is slightly harder than marble, but both offer reasonably good durability. Spills on your stone kitchen benchtop should be cleaned up as soon as possible and there is some maintenance required to keep the surfaces in good condition. Talk to us about whether marble or granite would suit your home or business.
All granite slabs have the same general characteristics, despite being mined in different countries. However, slabs of the same colour vary to a greater degree than man-made engineered stones. We recommend you inspect your slab’s colour and pattern prior to it being cut.

Granite is a very durable material, however we recommend protecting your investment by not putting hot pots directly on it, and avoiding cutting directly onto your benchtop. Granite should not stain, however some granites are more porous than others. Wipe your spills up immediately and avoid sitting or standing on unsupported stone.
NATURAL STONE (GRANITE AND MARBLE)
Regular Cleaning
- Using a clean cloth, clean your countertop with a few drops of mild dishwashing detergent and warm water.
- Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth.
- Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids on the granite. The high acid content may etch the surface & may make it look dull.
- To keep your countertop stain free clean any spills such as grease, wine, vinegar or coffee etc immediately.
- Each granite has different absorption levels for water and other liquids, therefore we recommend not storing oil-based products such as oil or margarine on your benchtop as prolonged exposure will cause staining
Sealing
Your countertops are sealed by Wellington Granite during installation. Sealers can last up to 4-5 years of regular home use. Use spray-on sealers to re-seal your countertop. Please ask us about our suppliers’ care instructions.
Stain Removal
If you have an accidental spill on your granite countertop, wipe up with a paper towel as soon as possible. While granite is very stain-resistant, should a stain occur, use a Poultice ( mixture of baking soda, water (or mineral spirits) and white flour that you mix to the consistency of peanut butter). Apply poultice to the stain approximately ¼” thick and cover with plastic wrap. Allow it to cure for 24 to 48 hours. Stubborn stains may take a few applications.
- Oil-based Stains: Use a poultice with baking soda and water OR mineral spirits.
- Organic Stains: Use a poultice with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide solution OR acetone.
Slab thickness generally come in 20mm and 30mm. Wellington Granite specialises in mitring, up to 100mm.
